Walk Two: Dunnshill to Dale Abbey |
|
|
From the car park at Dunnshill,
descend to the bottom of the cutting to the A6096. Cross the road -
BEWARE! Very fast moving traffic at this point. Once across, the
signposted footpath climbs back up the cutting. Follow the path over
and down to a farm track. Turn right down the track, passing through
a gate by a cattle grid.
Follow this farm track as it winds its way downhill with pastureland
to your left. After about a mile you reach Columbine Farm.
|
|
|
At the farm, turn right uphill
following the fence. At the top, pass through a gate and keep left,
following the obvious path to the right hand side of the hedge. This
is a great place for rabbit spotting!
As the path rises to overgrown hedges and brambles it becomes rather
muddy (even in summer) so take care. Remember that this is still a
bridleway - large horses can fill narrow paths! Follow the path up
to a gate and enter Ockbrook Woods.
|
|
|
Continue through the woods as another
path merges from the right hand side down a slope. This is where you
turn off in
Walk No.3 for Ockbrook.
Carry onwards as the path bears left, through a gate, onto a rough track,
through another gate and down a fenced track. Turn left to bear past
All Saints Church on your right hand side. Note how the church
shares a roof with the house next door! At the end of the track,
continue left as the path
becomes a metalled road. |
|
|
To your right you may see the ruined
arch of the former abbey. Note also the house on your right that has been built
into part of the fabric of the old abbey buildings.
Continue down the road, turning right
at the end by the tree with benches around the trunk. Follow the
road down to the end and the Carpenters Arms for a well deserved break and
a bite to eat.
